The hymen is located on the inside of the vagina. The hymen is a thin membrane that surrounds or partially covers the vaginal opening. It’s location can vary among individuals; generally, it is located about two inches inside the vagina—it can differ in placement and size from person to person.

Importantly, the hymen does typically have an opening or multiple openings that allow menstrual blood to flow out of the vagina. It’s a misconception that the hymen completely covers the vaginal opening; rather, it comes in various shapes and sizes and may partially cover the opening or have gaps in it.

The hymen can be stretched or torn for various reasons, including physical activities, tampon use, or sexual intercourse, but its presence or absence isn’t a reliable indicator of virginity.
