What is a pap test? How is it performed? Is it a painful procedure?
Thank you for your question.
A Papanicolaou test (Pap test/Pap smear) is a screening procedure for cervical cancer. It tests the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix. The cervix is the opening of the uterus.
During the routine procedure, which is mostly recommended for women above 18 years of age (or before with parental consent), the doctor will insert a clear device. The cells from your cervix are gently scraped away and then examined for abnormal growth.
The procedure may be mildly uncomfortable and may be discomforting, but does not usually cause any long-term pain.
If you are thinking of getting the procedure done, I would recommend you to do so. However, please consult your Gynecologist ahead of time.
I hope we have helped you.
